Materials

  • TLC Essentials medium (worsted) weight yarn (Solids: 6 oz/312 yds/170g per skein;
    Ombres: 4 1/2 oz/245 yds/127g per skein):
    • 4 skeins #2220 butter (MC)
    • 2 skeins #2958 falling leaves (CC)
    • 1 skein each #2915 cranberry (CC), #2254 persimmon (CC) and #2368 dark brown (CC)
  • Size J/10/6mm crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Tapestry needle

Pattern Notes

Weave in loose ends as work progresses.

Join rounds with a slip stitch unless otherwise stated.

Chain-3 counts as first double crochet throughout unless otherwise stated.

Squares are worked diagonally, from corner to corner.

When changing colors, keep unused color to wrong side of work; do not cut yarn until color is no longer needed. Do not carry colors on wrong side of work, unless otherwise noted; use a separate skein or ball for each color change; the Squares require 2 balls MC and 1 ball CC.

Each Block requires 4 Leaf Squares, 1 Square of each CC.

Special Stitches

Beginning block (beg block): Ch 5, 3 dc in 5th ch from hook.

Block: Sl st in ch-3 sp of next block, ch 3, 3 dc in same sp, dc in place indicated.

Leaf Square

Make 12 each cranberry, persimmon, falling leaves and brown.

Row 1: With CC, beg block (see Special Stitches), change color (see Pattern Notes) to MC in last dc. (1 block)

Row 2: Beg block, block (see Special Stitches). (2 blocks)

Row 3: Beg block, change color to CC, sl st around beg ch of previous block, ch 3 (see Pattern Notes), 3 dc in same sp, change color to MC, work 1 block, change color to CC in last dc of block. (3 blocks)

Row 4: Beg block, change color to MC (carry CC along back for the next 2 blocks), sl st around beg ch of previous block, ch 3, 3 dc in same sp, work 1 block in MC, change color to CC, work 1 block, fasten off MC. (4 blocks)

Row 5: Beg block, sl st around beg ch of previous block, ch 3, 3 dc in same sp, work 3 blocks. (5 blocks)

Row 6: Beg block, sl st around beg ch of previous block, ch 3, 3 dc in same sp, work 4 blocks. (6 blocks)

Row 7: Beg block, sl st around beg ch of previous block, ch 3, 3 dc in same sp, work 5 blocks, change color to MC in last dc. (7 blocks)

Row 8: Beg block, change color to CC, sl st around beg ch of previous block, ch 3, 3 dc in same sp, work 5 blocks, change color to MC (add a new skein here), work 1 block. (8 blocks)

Row 9: Beg block, change color to CC in last st, sl st around beg ch of previous block, ch 3, 3 dc in same sp, work 6 blocks, change to MC in last st, work 1 block, turn. (9 blocks)

Row 10: Sl st in each of first 3 dc and in first ch-3 sp, ch 3, 3 dc in same sp, change color to CC in last st, work 6 blocks, change color to MC in last st, work 1 block, sl st in ch-3 sp of last block, turn. (8 blocks)

Row 11: Carry CC across, sl st in each of first 3 dc and with CC, sl st in first ch-3 sp, ch 3, 3 dc in same sp, change color to MC in last st, work 1 more block, change to CC in last st, work 3 more blocks, change to MC in last st, work 1 block, change color to CC, work 1 block, sl st in ch-3 sp of last block, turn. (7 blocks)

Row 12: Sl st in each of first 3 dc and, changing to MC, sl st in first ch-3 sp, ch 3, 3 dc in same sp, change to CC, work 4 blocks, change to MC in last st, work 1 block, sl st in ch-3 sp of last block, turn. (6 blocks)

Row 13: Sl st in each of first 3 dc and in first ch-3 sp, ch 3, 3 dc in same sp, change color to CC, work 3 blocks, change to MC in last st, work 1 block, sl st in ch-3 sp of last block, sl st in ch-3 sp of last block, turn. (5 blocks)

Row 14: Sl st in each of first 3 dc and with CC, sl st in first ch-3 sp, ch 3, 3 dc in same sp, fasten off MC on this end of the block, work 3 blocks, sl st in ch-3 sp of last block, turn. (4 blocks)

Row 15: Sl st in each of first 3 dc, change color to MC, sl st in first ch-3 sp, ch 3, 3 dc in same sp, change color to CC, work 1 block, change color to MC, work 1 block, sl st in ch-3 sp of last block, fasten off CC, turn. (3 blocks)

Row 16: Sl st in each of first 3 dc and in first ch-3 sp, ch 3, 3 dc in same sp, work 1 block, sl st in ch-3 sp of last block. (2 blocks)

Row 17: Sl st in each of first 3 dc and in first ch-3 sp, ch 3, 3 dc in same sp, sl st in ch-3 sp of last block, do not fasten off. (1 block)

Block

Make 12.

Note: Each Block requires 1 Leaf Square of each leaf color.
Leaf Squares are joined tog with all stems at center.

First Square Edging

Rnd 18: Continuing with MC, ch 1, sc in same sp as sl st, *[ch 3, sc between next 2 blocks on side] across side of Leaf Square, (sc, ch 1, sc) in corner st, rep from * across each side of Leaf Square, ch 3, sl st in first sc, fasten off.

Joining Square Edging

Rnd 18: Follow rnd 18 of First Square Edging for non-joined edges of each Leaf Square; for joining edges, sc in corner of working Leaf Square, sl st in ch-1 sp of adjacent Leaf Square, sc in same corner st of working Leaf Square, *ch 1, sl st in next ch-3 sp of adjacent Leaf Square, ch 1, sc in between next 2 blocks on working Leaf Square, rep from * across side edge of leaf Square, ending with sc in corner of working Leaf Square, sl st in ch-1 sp of adjacent Leaf Square, sc in same corner st of working Leaf Square; continue working pattern around Leaf Square either attaching to previous Leaf Squares or completing rnd 18 for non-joining sides of First Square Edging.

Block Edging

Rnd 1: Join MC with sl st in any corner ch-1 sp, (ch 3, dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in same corner sp, *ch 1, 2 dc in next ch-3 sp (or in ch-1 sp at joining), rep from * around, working (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in each corner ch-1 sp, ch 1, sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch-3, fasten off.

Joining Blocks

Place 2 Blocks with WS tog, working in top lps only of each Block, attach MC with sc in corner ch-1 sp, sc in each st across, ending with last sc in next corner ch-1 sp, fasten off.

Join Blocks in rows of 3 Blocks across and 4 columns down.

Afghan Edging

Rnd 1 (RS): Attach MC with sc in corner ch-1 sp, sc in each st around entire outer edge, join in beg sc, fasten off.
