BIG TOP HAT

FINISHED SIZES
Instructions given fit 15-inch head; changes for 17-inch and 19-inch head are in [].

MATERIALS
  • DK (light worsted) or sport (fine) weight yarn:Click here for larger image.
  •   50 yds. Yellow
      50 yds. Lime Green
      50 yds. Royal Blue
      50 yds. Orange
      20 yds. Aqua Blue
  • 2 1/2-inch piece of cardboard
  • Tapestry needle
  • G/4mm hook or hook size needed to obtain gauge

GAUGE
4 sc = 1 inch; 5 sc rows = 1 inch.

BASIC STITCHES
Ch, sl st, sc

PANEL (make one each yellow, lime, royal blue and orange)
Row 1: Ch 16 [18, 20], sc in second ch from hook, sc in each ch across, turn. (15 sc made) [17 sc made, 19 sc made]
Rows 2–32 [2–36, 2–40]: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. At end of last row, fasten off.
Matching ends of rows, sew panels together in the following sequence: yellow, lime, orange and royal blue.
To form point, fold last row of one Panel and sew sts together.
Repeat on each Panel forming four points.
For bottom edging, working in starting ch on opposite side of row 1 on each Panel at bottom opening, join aqua blue with sc in first ch, sc in each ch around, join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off.

POMPOM (make one each yellow, lime, royal blue and orange)
Wrap yarn around cardboard 100 times, slide loops off cardboard, tie separate strand of same color around center of all strands. Cut loops. Trim ends to 2 inches.
Sew each Pompom opposite matching color point on Hat.

 

BOY'S HAT

FINISHED SIZES

GAUGE
4 dc = 1 inch; 2 dc rows = 1 inch.

BASIC STITCHES
Ch, sl st, sc, dc

HAT
Rnd 1: With aqua blue, ch 61, [71, 81], sc in second ch from hook, sc in each ch around, join with sl st in first sc, turn. Fasten off. (60 sc made) [70 sc made, 80 sc made]
Note: When changing colors, drop color to wrong side of work. Carry loosely across back of work and pick up again when needed.
Rnd 2: Working this rnd in back lps only, join orange with sl st in first st, ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in next 4 sts changing to lime in last st made, (dc in next 5 sts changing to orange in last st made, dc in next 5 sts changing to lime in last st made) across to last 5 sts, dc in last 5 sts, join with sl st in top of ch-3, turn.
Rnd 3: Sl st in next st, ch 3, dc in next 4 sts changing to orange in last st made, (dc in next 5 sts changing to lime in last st made, dc in next 5 sts changing to orange in last st made) around to last 5 sts, dc in last 5 sts, join, turn.
Rnd 4: Ch 3 changing to lime in last ch made, dc in next 5 sts changing to orange in last st made, (dc in next 5 sts changing to lime in last st made, dc in next 5 sts changing to orange in last st made) around to last 4 sts, dc in last 4 sts, join, turn.
Rnd 5: Ch 3, dc in next 4 sts changing to lime in last st made, (dc in next 5 sts changing to orange in last st made, dc in next 5 sts changing to lime in last st made) around to last 5 sts, dc in last 5 sts, join, turn.
Rnd 6: Ch 3 changing to orange in last ch made, dc in next 5 sts changing to lime in last st made, (dc in next 5 sts changing to orange in last st made, dc in next 5 sts changing to lime in last st made) around to last 4 sts, dc in last 4 sts, join, turn.
Rnd 7: Ch 3, dc in next 4 sts changing to orange in last st made, (dc in next 5 sts changing to lime in last st made, dc in next 5 sts changing to orange in last st made) around to last 5 sts, dc in last 5 sts, join, turn. Fasten off.
Rnd 8: Join aqua blue with sc in first st, sc in each st around, join with sl st in first sc, turn.
Rnd 9: Working this rnd in back lps only, ch 1, sc in each st around, join, turn. Fasten off.
Rnd 10: Join royal blue with sl st in first st, ch 3, dc in each st around, join with sl st in top of ch-3, turn.
Rnds 11–17 [11–19, 11–21]: Ch 3, dc in each st around, join, turn. At end of last rnd, fasten off leaving 8-inch end for gathering.
Weave end through sts of last rnd, pull tight to gather. Secure.

  • 2 1/2-inch piece of cardboard
  • Tapestry needle
  • G/4mm hook or hook size needed to obtain gauge

GAUGE
4 sc = 1 inch; 5 sc rows = 1 inch.

BASIC STITCHES
Ch, sl st, sc

HAT
Rnd 1: With lime, ch 61 [70, 77], sc in second ch from hook, sc in each ch around, join with sl st in first sc, turn. (60 sc made) [69 sc made, 76 sc made]
Rnds 2–5: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join, turn.
Note: For cluster (cl), yo, insert hook in next st, yo, draw lp through, yo, draw through 2 lps on hook, (yo, insert hook in same st, yo, draw lp through, yo, draw through 2 lps on hook) 4 times, yo, draw through all 6 lps on hook.
Rnd 6: Join fuchsia with sc in first st, sc in next st, cl (see Note) in next st, (sc in next 2 sts, cl in next st) around, join, turn. Fasten off.
Rnd 7: Join lime with sc in first st, sc in each st around, join, turn.
Rnds 8–11: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join, turn. At end of last rnd, fasten off.
Rnd 12: Join aqua blue with sc in first st, cl in next st, (sc in next 2 sts, cl in next st) around to last st, sc in last st, join, turn. Fasten off.
Rnds 13–17: Repeat rnds 7–11.
Rnd 18: With orange, repeat rnd 6. Rnd 19: Repeat rnd 7.
Rnds 20–34 [20–38, 20–42]: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join, turn. At end of last rnd, fasten off leaving 8-inch end for gathering.
Weave end through sts on last rnd, pull tight to gather. Secure.

TRIM
Rnd 1: Working in starting ch on opposite side of rnd 1, join purple with sc in any ch, sc in each ch around, join with sl st in first sc.
Rnd 2: Working this rnd in front lps only, ch 1, sc in first st, ch 5, (sc in next st, ch 5) around, join.
Rnd 3: Working this rnd in back lps of rnd 1, ch 1, sc in first st, ch 5, (sc in next st, ch 5) around, join. Fasten off.

POMPOM
Wrap purple around cardboard 100 times, slide loops off cardboard, tie separate strand of purple around center of all strands. Cut loops. Trim ends.
Sew to top of Hat.
