Newsboy Cap & Medallion Belt

Go retro with a funky cap and belt combo that's perfect with jeans for a casual day of shopping at the mall or hanging out with friends.

Belt: 2 x 32 inches, excluding ribbon

Materials

  • Red Heart Super Saver medium (worsted) weight yarn (7 oz/364 yds/198g per skein): 2 skeins #382 country blue
  • Sizes E/4/3.5mm and F/5/3.75mm crochet hooks or sizes needed to obtain gauge
  • 28 inches 3/8-inch-wide off-white satin ribbon
  • Straight pins

Gauge
Size F hook: 4 sts = 1 inch; 3 rows = 1 inch; medallion motif = 2 inches in diameter
Size E hook: 5 sc = 1 inch; 5 sc rows = 1 inch. Check gauge to save time.

Pattern Notes
Weave in loose ends as work progresses. Join rounds with a slip stitch unless otherwise stated.

Cap

Wedge

Make 7.

  • Row 1: With size F hook, ch 2, 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, turn. (2 sts)
  • Row 2: Ch 2 (does not count as a hdc), hdc in first sc, (sc, hdc) in next sc, turn. (3 sts)
  • Row 3: Ch 1, sc in first hdc, hdc in next sc, (sc, hdc) in next hdc, turn. (4 sts)
  • Row 4: Ch 1, sc in first hdc, hdc in next sc, sc in next hdc, (hdc, sc) in next sc, turn. (5 sts)
  • Row 5: Ch 2, hdc in first sc, sc in next hdc, hdc in next sc, sc in next hdc, (hdc, sc) in next sc, turn. (6 sts)
  • Rows 6-23: Work in pat of hdc in sc and sc in hdc across each row and working 2 sts in last st of each row, turn. (24 sts)
    Using diagram as a guide, with straight pins, pin 2 wedges tog, starting at row 1 center point of pieces, sl st a 1/4-inch seam across edge, because corner is curved so that Cap will fit band, seam at widest point will be 1 inch. Join rem 5 Cap Wedges in same manner.

Cap Band

  • Row 1: Ch 5, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each rem ch across, turn. (4 sc)
  • Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn.
    Rep row 2 until Cap Band measures 24 inches. Holding row 1 to last row and working through both thicknesses, sl st across forming a circle, fasten off.
    With RS tog, pin Cap Band to cap, attach yarn, easing in fullness, sl st pieces tog, fasten off.

Brim

  • Note: Brim is worked across 3 Wedge shapes on the hat, but the first row will be worked between the 2 seams (center) of 1 Cap Wedge.
  • Row 1: With size E hook, with RS of top of Cap facing, attach yarn in line with Wedge seam in Cap Band, ch 1, sc dec (see Stitch Guide) over same st yarn was attached and next st, sc in next 6 sts, sc dec over next 2 sts, sc in next 5 sts, sc dec over next 2 sts (14 sts between 2 seams on cap), fasten off, do not turn.
  • Row 2: With RS of top of Cap facing, attach yarn in first sc of previous row, ch 1, sc in same st as beg ch-1, sc in each of next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 6 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 3 sts, fasten off. (16 sc)
  • Row 3: With RS of top of Cap facing, attach yarn 2 sts to the right of first st of previous row, ch 1, sc in each of next 2 sts, sc in each of next 16 sts of previous row, sc in each of next 2 sts, fasten off, do not turn. (20 sc)
  • Row 4: With RS of top of Cap facing, attach yarn 2 sts to the right of first st of previous row, ch 1, sc in each of next 2 sts, sc in each of next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 15 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc in next st, sc in each of next 2 sts on band, fasten off, do not turn. (26 sc)
  • Rows 5-8: Rep row 4, attaching yarn 2 sts to the right of first st of previous row, working inc above the 2 inc sts and working 2 sts beyond previous row, fasten off, do not turn. (50 sc)
  • Rows 9 & 10: With RS of top of Cap facing, attach yarn 2 sts to the right of first st of previous row, ch 1, sc in each of next 2 sts, sc in each sc across of previous row, sc in each of next 2 sts beyond sts of previous row, fasten off, do not turn. (58 sc)

Cap Button

  • Rnd 1: With hook size F, ch 3, sl st to join in first ch to form a ring, ch 2 (counts as first hdc throughout), 7 hdc in ring, join in 2nd ch of beg ch-2. (8 hdc)
  • Rnd 2: Ch 2, working in back lp only, hdc in same st as beg ch-2, 2 hdc in each rem st around, join in 2nd ch of beg ch-2. (16 hdc).
  • Rnd 3: Ch 2, hdc in each hdc around, join in 2nd ch of beg ch-2, leaving a length of yarn, fasten off.

Belt

Medallion

Make 16.

  • Rnd 1: With size F hook, ch 3, sl st to join in first ch of ch-3 to form a ring, ch 1, 12 sc in ring, join in beg sc. (12 sc)
  • Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in same sc as beg ch-1, ch 3, sk next sc, [sc in next sc, ch 3, sk next sc] 5 times, join in beg sc. (6 ch-3 sps)
  • Rnd 3: (Sl st, 2 sc, sl st) in each ch-3 sp around, join in first sl st, fasten off.
    Join Medallions at 2 points of 2 sc groups on each Medallion to previous Medallion until all are joined in a strip.
    Draw ribbon through ch-3 sp at each end of Belt, tie ends in a bow.
