Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend

Every woman loves diamonds, and this shawl is loaded with them! Filet crochet makes the delicate threadwork go quickly. This classic pattern can be made for evening wear, an extra wrap at a wedding or even for the prom with a change of color and different beads.

Size

17 x 75 inches, excluding fringe

Materials

  • Aunt Lydia's crochet cotton size 10 (400 yds per ball):
    1,700 yds #0001 white
  • Size 5/1.90mm steel crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Beading needle
  • 6mm crystal beads: 154

Gauge

[Dc in next st, ch 2, sk 2 sts] 4 times (4 sps) = 1 1/4 inches; 4 rows of sps = 1 1/4 inches
Check gauge to save time.

Pattern Notes

Weave in loose ends as work progresses.
Join rounds with a slip stitch unless otherwise stated.

Shawl

Row 1: Ch 156, dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in each of next 2 chs, [ch 2, sk each of next 2 chs, dc in next ch (sp), dc in each of next 3 chs (block)] 25 times, turn. (26 blocks; 25 sps)
Row 2: Ch 5 (counts as first dc, ch 2 throughout), sk each of next 2 sts, dc in next st, [2 dc in next ch-2 sp, dc in next st, ch 2, sk each of next 2 sts, dc in next st] across, turn.
Row 3: Ch 3 (counts as first dc throughout), 2 dc in ch-2 sp, dc in next dc, [ch 2, sk each of next 2 sts, dc in next st] 49 times, 2 dc in next ch-2 sp, dc in next dc, turn. (1 block; 49 sps; 1 block)
Row 4: Ch 5, sk each of next 2 sts, dc in next st, 2 dc in next ch-2 sp, dc in next dc, [ch 2, sk each of next 2 sts, dc in next st] 23 times, 2 dc in next ch-2 sp, dc in next st, [ch 2, sk each of next 2 sts, dc in next st] 23 times, 2 dc in next ch-2 sp, dc in next st, ch 2, sk each of next 2 sts, dc in next st, turn. (1 sp; 1 block; 23 sps; 1 block; 23 sps; 1 block; 1 sp)
Rows 5–24: Following chart (see page 48) for Rows 5–24, working blocks and sps as indicated.
Rows 25–206: Follow chart for Rows 25–38, until a total of 13 rep are completed.
Rows 207–231: Follow chart for Rows 207–231. At the end of row 231, fasten off.

Fringe Edging

Note: Thread 154 crystal beads onto crochet white cotton.
Rnd 1: Working across long edge, attach white in any corner, ch 1, *[2 sc over side edge of each dc row and 3 sc over side edge of each row that beg with a ch-5 (5 sc over each 2-row group)] across long edge (587 sc), working across short end of shawl, [ch 40, drop lp from hook, push up bead close to dropped lp, insert hook in opposite side of bead and pick up dropped lp and draw through bead, sk next st on shawl, sl st in next st] across edge (77 beaded ch lps), rep from * around, join in beg sc, fasten off.
