The next time you want an evening on the town, stitch this attractive jewel-toned purse. Petite and demure, it will be a fine companion on any social occasion.

Materials

  • DMC Cebelia crochet cotton size 10 (282 yd balls): 2 balls garnet #816
  • Size 7 steel crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge
  • 7 1/2 x 12-inch garnet material
  • Sewing needle and thread
  • Straight pins
  • Tapestry needle

Gauge
8 rows = 1 1/2 inches; 5 patterns = 2 inches
Check gauge to save time.

Pattern Notes
Weave in loose ends as work progresses.
Ch 3 counts as first dc throughout.

Purse
(Make 2)
Row 1 (RS): Ch 70, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each rem ch across, turn. (69 sc)
Row 2 (WS): Ch 3, 2 dc in same st as beg ch-3, [sk 3 sts, {sc, ch 3, 3 dc} in next st] rep across to last st, dc in last st, turn.
Row 3 (RS): Ch 3, [fpdc around each of next 3 dc, ch 3, sc in next ch sp] rep across to last 3 dc sts, fpdc around each of next 2 dc, dc in last dc, turn.
Row 4 (WS): Ch 3, 2 dc in same st as beg ch-3, [{sc, ch 3, 3 dc} in next ch sp] rep across to last st, sc in last st, turn.
Rows 5–30: Rep Rows 3 and 4. At the end of Row 30, fasten off.
With tapestry needle and length of garnet, sew across opposite sides of foundation chs and sew sides of purse tog, leaving Row 30 of each side open.

Handle
(Make 2)
Ch 2, sc in 2nd ch from hook, turn last sc made to your left, sc in strand on left side of st, [turn last sc just made to your left, sc in both strands on left side of st] rep until piece measures 12 1/2 inches, fasten off.

Lining
Cut material on fold, 7 1/2 x 6 inches. Sew 1/4 inch hem down each side of material, fold in half and sew sides tog, sewing a 1/4 inch hem down each side. Sew a 1/2-inch hem around top opening of lining. Place lining inside of purse and sew in place around top and down each side seam.

Finishing
Pin 1/4 inch of handle to Row 25 approximately 2 inches in from edge, rep the same on opposite edge of purse with opposite end of same handle, sew 1/4 inch of handle to purse. Rep on opposite side of purse with 2nd handle.
