Brightly colored motifs give this eye-catching tote a fun, fresh summer look, and the size 18 nylon cord makes it extra durable and waterproof.

Materials

  • Omega La Espiga #18 nylon cord (7 oz/197 yds/200g per roll): 2 rolls each #10 hot pink and #54 lime green
  • Size 00/2.70mm steel crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Stitch marker

Gauge
5 sc = 1 inch; 5 sc rows = 1 inch

Pattern Notes
Join with slip stitch as indicated unless otherwise stated.
Change colors at joining at end of rounds, work last stitch of round, drop working color, insert hook in first stitch and pull through new color, pull through last loop on hook to create slip stitch.

Tote
Square Motif
Make 16.
Rnd 1: Leaving 5-inch end of hot pink, ch 2, 8 sc in 2nd ch from hook, join (see Pattern Notes) in beg sc. (8 sc)
Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each st around, join in beg sc. (16 sc)
Rnd 3: Ch 1, 2 sc in first st, ch 1, sk next st, [2 sc in next st, ch 1, sk next st] around, join in beg sc. Fasten off.
Rnd 4: Working in back lps (see StitchGuide.com), join lime green with sc in first st, sc in next sc, [2 dc in next ch-1 sp, sc in each of next 2 sc] around, ending with 2 sc in last ch-1 sp, join in beg sc. (32 sc)
Rnd 5: Ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in each of next 3 sts, [2 sc in next st, sc in each of next 3 sts] around, join in beg sc. (40 sc)

Rnd 7: Join hot pink with sc in any ch-1 sp, ch 1, sc in same ch sp as beg sc, sc in each of next 2 sts, ch 1, sk next st, sc in each of next 2 sc, [(sc, ch 1, sc) in next ch-1 sp, sc in each of next 2 sts, ch 1, sk next st, sc in each of next 2 sts] around, join in beg sc. (48 sc)
Rnd 8: Sl st in first ch-1 sp, *ch 2, sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 2, sl st in next ch-1 sp, ch 3, (dc, ch 1, 54, ch 1, dc) in next ch-1 sp, ch 3**, sl st in next ch sp, rep from * around, ending last rep at **, join in beg sl st. Fasten off.

Top Motif
Make 8.
Rnds 1–7: Rep rnds 1–7 of Square Motif.
Rnd 8: Sl st in first ch-1 sp, *ch 2, sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 3, (dc, ch 1, tr, ch 1, dc) in next ch-1 sp, ch 3, sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 2, sl st in next ch-1 sp, rep from * once, leaving rem sts unworked. Fasten off.

Base
Row 1: With hot pink, ch 19, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn. (18 sc)
Rows 2–59: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. At end of last row, fasten off.

Handle
Make 2.
Row 1: With lime green, ch 91, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn. (90 sc)
Rows 2–4: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. At end of last row, fasten off.

Assembly
With RS of Motifs tog and with hot pink, sl st Motifs tog according to Assembly Diagram. Matching red dotted lines, sl st Motifs tog forming circle.

Kiwi Tote Assembly Diagram


[Sc or sl st bottom edge of 1 Motif to end of Base, sl st bottom edge of next 3 Motifs to side edge of Base] twice, join in beg sl st or sc. Fasten off.
Center short end of 1 Handle between rnds 5 and 6 on WS of first Motif to left of center Top Motif of Tote. Using 27 inches of lime green and leaving 6-inch end, use hook to pull lp from back to front through both layers of Handle and Motif. Leaving lp on hook, tightly knot end and rem cord on WS to secure. Inserting hook from front to back between rnds 5 and 6 of Motif and through bottom edge of Handle, work 4 sl sts to secure Handle to Tote. Fasten off.
Rep for opposite end of Handle, attaching it in same manner to WS of first Motif to right of center Top Motif of Tote.
Rep in same manner to attach rem Handle to opposite side of Tote.
